CONTİNUİTY OF THE PROPHETİC MESSAGE AND VARİABİLİTY OF THE SHARİA: AN ANALYSİS WİTHİN THE FRAMEWORK OF İSKİLİPLİ ATIF EFENDİ'S TEXTS
This study analyzes the dynamic link between the immutability of core tenets of faith—as a transcendent truth—and the adaptability of legal systems shaped by historical and societal needs, centering on İskilipî Âtıf Efendi’s article "Enbiyâ-i Kirâm Hazeratına Vahiy ve İnzâl Olunan Dîn-i İslâm’ın Şerâyi’ ve Menâhicde İhtilâfi". While the prophetic message conveyed from Adam to Muhammad (pbuh) demonstrates a fundamental unity of creed, worship forms, social regulations, and punitive measures have varied according to public interest (maslahah). The processes of abrogation (naskh) and modification (ta‘dil) are examined through the analytical lens of İskilipî Âtıf Efendi. In this context, historical cases are evaluated, such as marital practices transmitted in exegetical and historical literature as measures for population growth in humanity's initial stage that later became permanently prohibited, and the practice of simultaneous marriage to two sisters found in earlier dispensations, which reached a definitive prohibition in Islamic law (An-Nisa 4/23). Furthermore, the shift of the direction of prayer (qiblah) from Jerusalem to the Kaaba, along with transformations in financial worship and legal sanctions, demonstrates the comprehensive nature of the Muhammadan legal framework. In conclusion, this study aims to demonstrate that legal processes of abrogation and modification do not compromise the essential unity of religion, but rather reflect a divine wisdom interacting with human needs, highlighting the academic contribution of re-evaluating the aforementioned article through modern scholarship.
