Abstract


A CONTENT ANALYSIS STUDY ON GRADUATE STUDY THESIS WRITTEN IN TURKEY ON PUBLIC DIPLOMACY

Public diplomacy, which is also expressed as the activities of governments to create political, social and cultural effects on the citizens of other countries, is one of the effective type of diplomacy that is used intensively as a result of the disappearance of borders with globalization. Public diplomacy, which is used effectively with a wide variety of applications by different countries, stands out as a subject that is increasingly included in academic studies. This research examines masters and doctoral theses written on “public diplomacy” in Turkish universities by using content analysis method. Therefore, all graduate study theses are examined and a total of 134 master's and doctoral theses were found in the date of research (July 30, 2019). Contents of the thesis are examined under seven main categories: subject, year of study, research degree, method, research type, department and language used in research. Study shows that number of thesis on public diplomacy has generally an increasing trend in each year, and both old and Turkey's current situation regarding public diplomacy was handled. In terms of the research level, it has been observed that the number of studies conducted at master’s degree is higher, in addition to the case study method; descriptive research and literature review methods are also used. Study also indicates that the dissertations on public diplomacy are mostly carried out in the department of political sciences and especially in international relations. The language used in the thesis is mainly in Turkish.
