BİR İLETİŞİM ARACININ SOSYAL MEDYAYA DÖNÜŞÜMÜ: İLETİŞİMDE METAMORFOZ (WHATSAPP ÖZELİNDE)

Thanks to Internet technology, which has changed and reshaped the whole world, communication has reached different dimensions. Communication has gained speed through social media platforms, and spatial and temporal limitations have disappeared. Social media platforms have been joined by applications such as Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, which were developed only for this purpose, and now an application called Whatsapp, which was developed mainly for message-based communication. WhatsApp has become an application that allows interpersonal communication as well as communication between groups. Nowadays, we find that the application called WhatsApp is not only used for messaging purposes. In addition to the basic text-based messaging and digital content sharing features, the application has been extended with the status information sharing module, WhatsApp has outgrown a communication mechanism and become a new and transformative element of social media. With the WhatsApp status plugin, where individuals' posts can be viewed by the people they want, the application has moved away from being a simple communication tool and has gained features that can be defined as a social media platform. It is important to understand the dynamics of social media in order to study how the application called WhatsApp has moved and transformed away from communication between individuals and groups. WhatsApp, which is basically a simple messaging and communication application, has changed with the introduction of the status module; it has started to have similar functions as classic social media tools. The study is about the use of the WhatsApp status module. Research was conducted on how and for what purposes the WhatsApp status module is used by university students. In this study, the two-week WhatsApp status sharing of students studying in different universities and selected by simple random sampling was investigated. A total of 15 days of WhatsApp status sharing by 230 university students were evaluated in the study. The shares were analysed using the content analysis method. As a result of the study, it was found that female participants shared more than male participants and shared their posts in the form of photos. In addition, participants generally shared about religion and health topics. Participants provided the most explanations and information in the status messages they shared.
